There are a number of self-ligating brackets available in the market. One of the most significant differences from conventional dental braces is the absence of elastic ligature (bands or ties). The self-ligating braces use a slide mechanism to hold the archwire, thus reducing the amount of pressure exerted on the teeth, particularly when larger deflection of wire exists during treatment.* Self-ligating braces typically are smaller and more aesthetic since a metal door is required to hold wires in place. They are not invisible, but some companies offer clear options of these braces.
We offer treatment with metal or clear self-ligating braces such as Damon system. Compared to conventional metal brackets, Damon self-ligating braces are smaller and subsequently more comfortable to the lips and cheek. They use a sliding mechanism that can reduce the friction. One study even suggested that Damon 3 braces were less associated with white spot formation (decalcification) compared to the conventional ligation.**
